To meet the requirements of their Federal funding and/or designation, health center governing boards must:
- Meet at least once a month.
- Select the services to be provided by the health center.
- Schedule the hours during which such services will be provided.
- Approve the health center's annual budget.
- Approve the selection of a director (Program Director or CEO) for the health center.
- Establish general policies for the health center, except in the case of a governing board of a public center, such as a health department, public hospital, etc. These public centers are permitted to set up co-applicant boards in order to meet all the statutory requirements and are also permitted to reserve certain general policy authorities for setting policies and procedures. .
- Approve applications for subsequent grants for the health center.
Board Member Roles
- Define and preserve the mission of the health center.
- Provide leadership in fulfilling the health center's mission to provide health services to the underserved.
- Serve as the voice of the community, representing the community and its health care needs while promoting the center and its mission to the community.
- Make policies consistent with the overall mission of the center and applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations.
- Safeguard the health center's assets.
- Monitor and evaluate the health center's performance and the board's own performance.
- Plan for the long-range future and viability of the health center.
